Mother’s Day is a day when we celebrate all mother’s. Honouring the important roll mother’s have in the family and acknowledging their importance in society as a whole.
Mother’s Day is celebrated in over 40 countries around the world on various different days, most commonly in the month of March or May.
In its modern form Mother’s Day originated in the United States. Along with her mother, a lady called Anne Jarvis in Philadelphia organised women’s groups to celebrate friendship and health. On May 12th 1914 Anne Jarvis’ mother died and many people mourned the loss. Her funeral was held and Anne wore a white carnation as a symbol of her love and a tribute to her mother. This custom of wearing carnations as a tribute to mothers developed over the years; red and pink carnations for living mothers and white for mothers who were no longer alive. What originally had begun as a day of honor then became a day to celebrate all mothers with cards, flowers and gifts and of course phone calls.

Mother’s day is a wonderful day that allows us to show our mother’s how much we appreciate them, and all they do for us. Make time for our mothers and organise something special for this one day that is all about them.
